African American WACs Born in Kentucky

This is a partial list of the African American women born in Kentucky who served in the WACs. The information comes from World War II Army Enlistment Records. WAC [Women's Army Corps] was the women's branch of the U.S. Army,  established in 1943. It was previously an auxiliary unit called WAAC [Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, formed in 1942 by Public Law 554]. The WACs were disbanded in 1973 and all units were integrated into the U.S. Army.

For more information on African American women in the military, see It's Our Military, Too: Women and the U.S. Military, by J. H. Stiehm; To Serve My Country, To Serve My Race, by B. L. Moore; and When the Nation was in Need: Blacks in the Women's Army Corps During World War II, by M. S. Putney.
