Jackson, Moses

(born: c. 1835) 

Jackson was born a slave in Virginia about 1835. In 1864 he left slavery behind and made his way to Camp Nelson, Kentucky, where he volunteered as a private in Company G of the 5th U.S. Colored Cavalry Regiment on September 1, 1864, stating at that time to be 29 years old and a resident of Shelby County, where he lived on the farm of Mrs. N. Jackson.

After the war Moses lived in Anderson County, where he married Martha Jackson in 1866. He is found on the 1870 Federal Census as a 35-year old black man with wife Martha and three children and two stepchildren.
