Carter, Ira Bailey

(born: 1896) Carter was born in March 1896 in the Anderson County community of Alton and is found in the 1900 Anderson County Census as the son of John H. & Larra Carter. He also appears on the 1910 report as a 13-year old boy.

Carter served during World War I as a private 1st class in Company A of the 801st Pioneer Infantry, U.S. Army, and is found on a list of soldiers from that war compiled by Wyatt Shely, Anderson County historian. He entered the service at Lawrenceburg on July 29, 1918 and was discharged at Camp Zachary Taylor in Louisville on January 14, 1919. A copy of his discharge is on file at the Anderson County Courthouse in Lawrenceburg.

From September 8, 1918 until June 5, 1919 he was part of the American Expeditionary Forces serving in France. The 801st Pioneer Infantry arrived in France in the middle of September 1918. They were placed in the  rear of the fighting lines. After the ceasefire, the regiment remained in France engaged in salvage work.
