Brown, Milton

(born: c. 1830) Brown was born a slave in Virginia about 1830. He married Charlotte Brown in 1858. A soldier during the Civil War, he served as a private in Company H of the 12th U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery USA. He enlisted at Camp Nelson on September 17, 1864.

Under the authorization of the Federal commander for the Department of Kentucky, the 12th Regiment of U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery USA was organized at Camp Nelson in July 1864. The regiment saw no reported action, serving mainly garrison duty at various locations. Brown was discharged April 24, 1866.

Brown first appears in Anderson County records as a 50-year old man living with his wife Charlotte and son O.H., age 11. His 30-year old daughter Lou and grandson Louis also lived in the same household.
