Matthews, Mildred Marks Carr

(born: 1948)

Mildred Marks C. Matthews, a baker, was born in Lexington, KY, the daughter of James and Elizabeth Marks. Her father was a baker, and her mother did some professional baking; they did not have a store but took orders and baked at their home.

Mildred Matthews learned to bake from her parents, discovering her own clientele in 1983 when she made her sister's wedding cake. She was owner of Millie's Cakes and More, a bakery located at 908 Liberty Road, near the corner of Winchester and Liberty Roads in Lexington. The bakery was first listed in the Lexington Kentucky City Directory in 1991.

Matthews had to close the business after a few years, in the early 1990s, because of health problems.

Matthews is a graduate of Bryan Station High School and Wilton School of Cake Decorating and Confectionary Art.

Information submitted by Matthews's sister, Bonnie Smith.
