Marie Bell Gurton was born in Forks of Elkhorn (Franklin County), KY, the daughter of Lonnie and Laura Beechman Gurton. The family is enumerated in the 1920, 1930, and 1940 U.S. Censuses. In 1930 Lonnie Gurton was a widower employed as a truck driver. He cared for his nine children with the help of his mother Lucy Gurton. In 1940 he had remarried. Marie  was the oldest of the last three children in the home.

In 1942, Marie Gurton was a waitress living in Frankfort, KY, according to her entry in the Frankfort city directory. That same year she had married and enlisted in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps in Cincinnati, OH as Marie G. Sanders, according to her record in the National Archives, Access to Archival Databases.

After her military service she returned to Kentucky, where she married Zack Woodard. In 1951 the family lived in Frankfort. Marie later worked as a typist at the Kentucky Department of Transportation. Marie Bell Gurton Sanders Woodard died in Frankfort and is buried in the Sunset Memorial Gardens and Mausoleum there.
