Lucille F. Butler was living in Scott County, KY when she enlisted in the Army, according to the record in Ancestry. She enlisted in Indianapolis, IN. Born in Georgetown, KY, she was the daughter of Ella Mae Banks and Kaner Butler. The family is enumerated in the 1930 U.S. Census. In the 1940 U.S. Census, Lucille Butler had completed one year of college, lived with the Cuel family in Frankfort, and was employed as the family's maid. She is listed a second time in the 1940 U.S. Census as living with her family in Georgetown, KY when her mother Ella was a widow. Lucille, her mother, and a sister were all employed as maids. Lucille had completed a second year of college.

Three years later Lucille enlisted in the Army. In 1945, she was stationed at Halloran General Hospital on Staten Island, NY. She came home at Christmas time and married Robert S. Shirley from Indiana. The wedding took place at her mother's home.

After her military service, Lucille Shirley was employed at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Anderson, IN. Lucille Frances Butler Shirley died in Indiana in 2012 and is buried at Anderson Memorial Park in Anderson.
