Juanita Buchanan was living in Louisville, KY when she enlisted in the Army in Cincinnati, OH, according to her record in Ancestry. She was born in Jackson County, KY, the daughter of Ella C. Lasly and Buford F. Buchanan. In 1930, the family lived in Frankfort, KY; Juanita's mother had remarried and she worked as a cook in a restaurant.

In 1943, Juanita Buchanan enlisted in the Army. She was married by 1944, then known as Juanita Buchanan Maddox. After her military service, Juanita returned to Kentucky. She had married again by 1950, when her name was Juanita Buchanan Patterson. She died in Columbia, KY in 1981 and is buried in Flatwoods Community Cemetery.
