78th Tank Battalion
The battalion was the first Black Armor Unit formed by the U.S. Army, January 13, 1941. The men reported to Ft. Knox, KY, to begin warfare training in March 1941. The battalion was re-designated the 758th Tank Battalion in May 1941. It was the first African American tank battalion to fight in World War II. The battalion was reactivated in 1946 and re-designated as the 64th Tank Battalion, later fighting in the Korean War. For more see Liberators: fighting on two fronts in World War II, by L.
