Parrish, Charles H., Jr.

In 1951, Charles H. Parrish, Jr. was the first African American faculty member at the University of Louisville (U of L) after the segregated school, Louisville Municipal College for Negroes, was closed. Parrish was also the first African American faculty member at a white school in the South. A sociologist, he chaired the Sociology Department. Parrish was also a civil rights activist. The Charles Parrish, Jr. Papers are at the U of L. A Kentucky Historical Marker [#2008] has been placed at the U of L Belknap Campus in his honor. For more see History of Blacks in Kentucky, by G. C.
