Johnson, Thomas Dudley "Dud"

(born: c. 1843) 

Thomas Dudley Johnson was born a slave in Kentucky about 1843. During the Civil War he volunteered to become a Union soldier, enlisting at Camp Nelson as a private in the 13th U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery Regiment, organized June 23, 1864 and attached to the Military District of Kentucky, Army Department of the Ohio.

Johnson served garrison duty at Camp Nelson, Smithfield, Lexington, and other points around Kentucky. He was mustered out of service November 18, 1865.

After the war, Johnson returned to Anderson County, where he and Miss Drucia Munday married on February 24, 1870. The couple is listed on the 1870 Anderson County Federal Census, where Dud is listed as 27 years old.
