Hughes, Samuel
(born: c. 1838) Hughes was born a slave about 1838 in Anderson County. At some point in time he was taken from Lawrenceburg to Missouri, where he remained a slave.During the Civil War, he volunteered as a soldier in the Union Army. He made his way west into Kansas, where he enlisted on November 21, 1863 and was mustered into Federal service at Wyandotte, Kansas on February 1, 1864 as a private in Company A of the 18th U.S. Colored Infantry Regiment. In May 1864 he was promoted to the rank of corporal and in June 1865 was promoted again to sergeant. He was mustered out of service at Huntsville, Alabama February 21, 1866.
