Green, Embrey

(born: c. 1838) Green was born a slave in Anderson County  about 1838. At an unknown time he was taken away from his home near Lawrenceburg and moved west to Arkansas.

On August 24, 1863 he enlisted in the Union Army and gave a statement that Anderson County, Kentucky was his place of birth, that he was about 25 years old, and that he believed he was born about 1838.

As a private in the 2nd Regiment of the Arkansas Infantry (African descent), this soldier saw duty with the regiment of garrison troops on duty at Helena, Arkansas that protected a strategic Union supply depot for the campaign against Vicksburg until January 1864. In March 1864, the 2nd was re-designated as the 54th U.S. Colored Infantry.

After the re-organization, Green was promoted to corporal. The 54th was again ordered to Helena, where it served until May 1864 when it was ordered to Fort Smith, Arkansas. On September 16, 1864 the regiment was engaged in a skirmish around Fort Gibson, which had been under siege for some time. On September 19, the 54th was part of a guard detail for a wagon train bringing supplies to Fort Gibson and was again attacked by Confederate forces at the Battle of Cabin Creek in what is now Oklahoma.

Other actions near Cow Creek, Kansas during the month of November 1864 were most likely against hostile Indians, who were very active in the region during the Civil War. In January 1864 the 54th was ordered to Little Rock to engaged in a small action along the Arkansas River on January 18. It remained on duty at Little Rock and other various posts until December 1866, when the regiment was mustered from service.
