Boston, Alexander

(born: c. 1819)

Born a slave about 1819 in Anderson County, Boston remained a slave into adulthood. President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation only freed slaves in states that were openly hostile toward the Union. Since Kentucky refrained from secession, the slaves within her borders  remained in bondage. Late in the war, however, the government called for the enlistment of colored regiments, and all who answered the call were granted immediate freedom.

Alexander Boston made his way to Camp Nelson to enlist. He was sworn in as a private but was later promoted to the rank of sergeant in Company C of the 124th U.S. Colored Infantry, organized at Camp Nelson January 1 to April 27, 1865.

By this time in the war, however, the conflict was fairly won and the 124th was regulated to serve garrison and guard duty at various points in the Department of Kentucky until December 20, 1867, when the men were discharged and mustered from Federal service.

After being discharged, Alex returned to his Anderson County home, where his wife Ellen and sons William, Charles, and John and daughter Martha were waiting. He remained a resident of Lawrenceburg and appears on 1870 Anderson County Census as a 51-year old black man with wife Ellen, the above named children,  plus two additional children, James and Francis, who were born after his return.

After 1870, however, the family disappeared from the Anderson County records; they most likely found their way west.
