Blackwell, Andy

(born: c. 1846) Blackwell was born a slave about 1846. He ran away from his master to become a Union soldier during the Civil War. He served as a private in Company D of the 6th U.S. Colored Cavalry Regiment, organized at Camp Nelson on October 24, 1864. It was attached to the 1st Division, District of Kentucky, Department of Ohio until February 1865, then to the Military District and Department of Kentucky until December 1865, and later was moved to the Department of Arkansas until April 1866.

Blackwell saw action in southwestern Virginia December 10-29, 1864. It included the capture and destruction of lead mines (December 17). The company was near the Battle of Marion December 17-18 and near Saltville December 20-21, 1864.

Blackwell served at Camp Nelson and Paducah until March 1865, then at La Grange, Tennessee until May, then back to Camp Nelson and on to Wild Cat and Danville until July of that year, then on to New Haven and Catlettsburg until October and Covington until December.

He later moved on to Louisville and then to Helena, Arkansas until January 1866 and thereafter was at Duvall's Bluff, Arkansas until April 15, 1866, where and when he was mustered out.

After the war, Andy Blackwell was  listed as a 24-year old living in Anderson County in the Christopher Lillard household, according to  the 1870 Federal Census.
