Lamb, Elisha G. "E. G."
(born: February 12, 1872 - died: March 15, 1917)Elisha G. Lamb was a watchmaker and jeweler who died in Hopkinsville, KY, in 1917. He and James Burley were two of the early African American jewelers in Kentucky. Lamb went by the name E. G. Lamb. He was born in Paris, KY, the son of Garrett and Rachel Greenwell Lamb. The occupation on E. G. Lamb's death certificate is given as "barber" [Kentucky Death Certificate File No. #6954, Registered No. 105 (Ancestry)]. The occupation may have been an error.
E. G. Lamb had a shop in Paris, KY, in 1899. He was living in Louisville in 1901 when Wesley Wilson, A.K.A. Black Pat, was charged with stealing a watch from Lamb. The following year, Lamb was listed as Elisha G. Lamb, a jeweler, in Caron's Directory of the City of Louisville for 1902, p.760. By 1908, Lamb was living in Hopkinsville where he was an active member of the community. He was a founding member of the newly developed Colored Taft Club. In 1910, E. G. Lamb was living in Hopkinsville. He and his wife, Elizabeth Lamb, were listed in Caron's Directory of the City of Hopkinsville for 1910-11-12.
In 1914, E. G. Lamb served as the sheriff officer with the Hopkinsville No.1 district of the Board of Elections Commission during the primary. Lamb was also a founding member of the newly developed Big Brothers Club. Each member donated 50 cents toward the fund that was to be used to buy Christmas gifts for poor children. Phil H. Brown was also a member of both organizations. In 1915, E. G. Lamb was a judge officer with the Board of Elections Commission.
