Marie Bell Gurton was born in Forks of Elkhorn (Franklin County), KY, the daughter of Lonnie and Laura Beechman Gurton. The family is enumerated in the 1920, 1930, and 1940 U.S. Census. In 1930, Lonnie Gurton was a widower who was employed as a truck driver. He cared for his nine children with the help of his mother Lucy Gurton. In 1940, Lonnie Gurton had remarried. Marie B. Gurton was the oldest of the last three children in the home.

In 1942, Marie B. Gurton was a waitress living in Frankfort, KY, according to her entry in the Frankfort city directory. That same year, she was married and enlisted in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps in Cincinnati, OH as Marie G. Sanders, according to her record in the National Archives, Access to Archival Databases. After her military service, she returned to Kentucky. She married Zack Woodard. In 1951, the family lived in Frankfort, KY. Marie would become employed as a typist at the Kentucky Department of Transportation. Marie Bell Gurton Sanders Woodard died in Frankfort, KY. She is buried in the Sunset Memorial Gardens and Mausoleum in Frankfort, KY.
