Emma E. Hughes was born in La Center, KY, the daughter of Sallie Hollowell and Virgil Hughes. The family is enumerated in the 1920 U.S. Census (a year before Emma was born). In the next census record, Emma's mother was married to Olie Stubbs and the family lived in Cape Girardeau, MO. Emma is enumerated using her middle and last names, Evelyn Hugh[e]s. Her mother and stepfather are listed in the 1930 city directory as restaurant employees.
Emma enlisted in the Army in Kansas City, KS, according to her record in the National Archives, Access to Archival Databases. Her residence was in Kansas City, MO, where she was a dressmaker/seamstress. Emma E. Hughes Wallace died in Kansas City, MO and is buried in Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery.
