Sallie Mae Bowman was born in Sadieville, KY, the daughter of Carrie Cutwright and William Bowman. The family is enumerated in the 1920 and 1930 U.S. Censuses. In the 1940 U.S. Census, Sallie M. Bowman was living with her cousin Harrison Hurley and his wife Elizabeth. She was a 1938 graduate of Davis High School in Georgetown, KY. She enlisted in the Army in 1943 in Cincinnati, OH, according to her record in the National Archives, Access to Archival Databases. She was stationed in Fort Des Moines, Iowa, for training.

After her military service, Sallie Mae Bowman returned to Georgetown and was living with her cousins Harrison and Elizabeth Hurley when the family was enumerated in the 1950 U.S. Census. Sallie Mae Bowman died in Georgetown, KY and is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery.
