Note: Biddle Memorial Institute was established April 7, 1867 at a meeting of the Catawba Presbytery. It was a school for African American men. The school was named by the widow and donor Mary D. Biddle in honor of her husband Captain Henry Jonathan Biddle. The school name was later changed to Johnson C. Smith University, and it is a private HCBU in Charlotte, NC.
