Lion Tamers (Newport, KY, baseball team)

The Lion Tamers was a baseball team in Newport, KY. They were the champions of the Northern Kentucky Semi-pro Negro Baseball League, and the team was in high demand. In August 1936, the team was matched in an exhibition game against the J C Penny's Baseball Club in Lindenwald, OH, on Kellogg Field. The Lion Tamers were considered a very good team, so several new players had been added to the Penny's team to help give them a better chance at winning. For more see "Penny's meet Colored team at Lindenwald," Hamilton Daily News Journal, 08/27/1936, p.12.
