Born in 1956 in Lexington, KY, Jack Givens' childhood friend James Lee played high school basketball at Henry Clay in Lexington.
He received into the Kentucky High School Hall of Fame in 2022.

The 6'5" forward played college basketball at the University of Kentucky from 1974 to 1978, participating in 116 games and scoring 996 total points, including the mighty dunk that ended the 1978 NCAA Championship victory over Duke. He was given the accolade "Freight Train" by fans.

Lee was selected by the Seattle Supersonics in the second round of the 1978 NBA draft but was soon released; he played with teams in the Western Basketball Association for the Tucson Gunners and in the Continental Basketball Association for the Lehigh Valley Jets until 1983.
