Carroll, Robert Newbold "Bob"
(born: Feb. 3, 1909 - died: Oct. 19, 1952)Bob Carroll, born in Louisville, KY, was a tenor saxophonist who played with the Kentucky Derbies and Jonah Jones' first band, Tinsley's Royal Aces; both bands played in Louisville. Carroll later joined Benny Carter's band in the 1920s and played at the Arcadia Ballroom in New York.
In 1934, Carroll was a soloist with Don Redman's band and was in the film short, Don Redman and his Orchestra. Carroll played on a number of recordings with various bands, including some of Fats Waller's.
Carroll was the son of Jeremiah and Minnie Jackson Carroll [source: 1910 U.S. Census]. The family of seven lived on Roselane Street in Louisville in 1910. Jeremiah supported the family as an engineer at a dye works company, and his mother Bettie, who lived with the family, worked as a cook for a private family. The family remained in Louisville; by 1930 Minnie Carroll was a widow [source: 1930 U.S. Census].
Though he was playing with various bands in other states, Carroll was included in the U.S. Censuses enumeration of the family in Louisville from 1910-1930. He was the husband of Lottie Carroll. He was an army veteran who had served during World War II. He died October 19, 1952 in New York and is buried in the Long Island National Cemetery [source: Find A Grave].
