Clarke, Daniel

(born: 1795  -  died: 1872)

Daniel Clarke was born in Africa; according to the 1870 U.S. Census, he was born around 1795. As a  child, he was captured by slave traders and brought to the U.S., first to Clark County, KY, then Frankfort, KY to be as a servant to U.S. Congressman and later Kentucky Governor James Clarke.

At the end of Gov. Clarke's term (1836-1839), Daniel Clarke continued as a servant to all of the following Kentucky governors until his death in 1872. At some point prior to his death, the Kentucky Legislature passed a law giving Daniel Clarke a pension of $12 per month.

A joint resolution was introduced by Senator Webb in honor of Daniel Clarke's years of dedicated service to Kentucky governors.

For more see "Death of the Kentucky Governor's Servant," New York Times, 2/29/1872, p. 5. He is also thought to be the same Daniel Clarke whose will is listed at rootsweb.com.
