Mary B. Odens Shade was born in Gadsden, AL, the daughter of Mary Daniels and George Odens. She was living in Louisville, KY when she enlisted in the Army in Cincinnati, OH, according to her record in the National Archives, Access to Archival Databases.

After her military service, Mary Shade last lived in Buffalo, NY, where she died in 1996. She is buried in Bath National Cemetery in Bath, NY.
