Sibyl Griffin was born in Barlow, KY, the daughter of Mattie Carruthers and Alex Griffin. Sibyl and her mother were living with Sibyl's maternal grandparents in Hinkleville, KY when they were enumerated in the 1920 U.S. Census. Years later, Sibyl's mother was married to Dee Ellison and living in St. Louis, MO when the family was enumerated in the 1940 U.S. Census. The family had been in St. Louis since at least 1933 when they were listed in the city directory. Sibyl, whose name is listed as Sibyl Ellison, was employed as a maid.

In February 1943, Sibyl Ellison enlisted in the Army in St. Louis, according to her record in the National Archives, Access to Archival Databases. In September of that year she married George Ezell Lipscomb there. After her military service, she returned to St. Louis. Sibyl L. Griffin Ellison Lipscomb died in St. Louis in 1964 and is buried in Washington Park Cemetery in Berkeley, MO.
