Mary K. Green was born in Louisville, KY, the daughter of Mary F. Brown and Benjamin H. Green. When the family was enumerated in the 1930 U.S. Census, Mary K.'s mother was a widow. The family is also enumerated in the 1940 U.S. Census.

Mary K. Green enlisted in the Army in 1943 in Cincinnati, OH, according to her record in National Archives, Access to Archival Databases. She also gave Boyd County, KY as her county of residence. After her military service, she returned to Kentucky. She was the wife of Oscar F. Hayden; they divorced in 1950. Mary Hayden, then a retired employee from Enro Shirt Factory, died in Louisville and is buried in the Green Meadows Cemetery.
