Ethel G. Coleman was born in Lexington, KY, the daughter of Lula Fields and Christopher Coleman. Ethel lived in Lexington with her aunts Bessie and Anna Fields when the family was enumerated in the 1930 U.S. Census. In the 1940 U.S. Census, Ethel lived with her aunt Bessie Birch and Bessie's husband Robert Birch.

In 1942, Ethel Coleman enlisted in the Army in Cincinnati, OH, according to the record in Ancestry. She returned to Lexington after her military service, and in 1948 married Emmanuel Watson there; the couple and their family lived together in Lexington. Ethel Watson was employed as a head start teacher prior to her death. She is buried in Blue Grass Memorial Gardens and Mausoleum in Nicholasville, KY.
