Sallie A. Woods Crenshaw was married when she enlisted in the Army at Fort Custer, MI, according to her record in the National Archives, Access to Archival Databases. She had been living in Indianapolis, IN, working as a waitress. Sallie was born in Sturgis, KY, the daughter of Julius and Ruby McGraw Woods. She was the wife of Fred Crenshaw.

The Woods family was living in Madisonville, KY, when they were enumerated in the 1930 U.S. Census. Julius Woods was a coal miner, and his family members were his wife, three daughters, and his mother. In the 1940 U.S. Census, Ruby Woods was a widow living with her mother-in-law in Madisonville, and her daughters Sallie Ann and Kathryn were working as cooks.

Four years later, Sallie Ann Woods married Fred Douglas Crenshaw in Chicago, IL on February 15, 1944 (source: Cook County, Illinois Marriage Index in Ancestry). She had enlisted in the Army in 1943. After her military service, Sallie A. Crenshaw and her husband settled in Racine, WI, where she died in 1991. She is buried in West Lawn Memorial Park. She was a member of American Legion Post #310 and had attended barbering school in Milwaukee, WI, in 1950.
