Susie D. L. Tardy is the name listed in her Army enlistment record in Ancestry. She was married and living in Indiana when she enlisted, her employment listed as working with heavy machinery. In her social security record, her name is Dorthy Lee Baker Tardy Burress. She was born in Central City, KY, the daughter of Blanche and James Henry (Jack) Baker. The family is enumerated in the 1920 U.S. Census; Doroth Lee Baker would be born at the end of the year. Her father Jack Baker was a coal miner who died in 1921 when the family was living in Cleaton, KY and Dorothy was six months old.

In the 1930 U.S. Census, Dorothy's mother has remarried and her name is Blanche Hunter. The family still lived in Central City. In the 1940 U.S. Census, Blanche Hunter was again a widow, living in Central City with her son Andrew Baker and a boarder. The family is enumerated as "white" in the census record.

Dorothy Baker had moved on from Central City. In 1942 she was married to Benjie E. Tardy, with whom she lived in Indianapolis, according to the city directory. Two years later, she enlisted in the Army. After her military service, she would return to Indianapolis, where she married James H. Burress. Dorothy Baker Tardy Burress died in 1997 in Indianapolis, where she is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery.
