Carson, Julius McClure "Kid Carson"
(born: October 6, 1906 - died: September 23, 1979)Julius McClure Carson, from Hopkinsville, KY, was a professional boxer from 1932-1937 and later a boxing trainer in Chicago. His family left Kentucky when he was a child, and by the time he was 3 years old, he and his family were living in Otter Creek, IN, where his father was a coal miner [source: 1910 U.S. Census]. Julius M. Carson was the son of Osia and Della Ann Hocker Carson. He died in Chicago, IL in 1979.
According to his entry in BoxRec: Kid Carson, he fought in 29 bouts. Kid Carson's career began with a win over Coy Atwood in Anderson, IN on October 28, 1932. His boxing career ended with a loss to Henry Schaft on August 26, 1937 at the Uptown Arena in Sioux City, IA. Kid Carson boxed in the light division. He lost the fight against Pee Wee Jarrell for the USA Indiana State Welterweight Title on February 26, 1937 in Fort Wayne, IN. His overall professional stats were 11 wins with four KOs, 13 losses with four KOs, and five ties.
After his boxing career, Carson worked with the Forest Preserve in Chicago, IL as a WPA employee, according to his 1940 WWII Draft Registration card [in Ancestry]. At the time, he was 5'6" and weighed 152 pounds.
He was also a boxing trainer, considered one of the best in Chicago. In the 1960s and 1970s, he trained world champion Eddie Perkins (1937-2012), a light welterweight boxer from Clarksdale, MS. He also trained boxers Bob Satterfield (1923-1977) and Freddie Dawson (1924-1992). Julius M. Carson shared his knowledge in his book, Winning Boxing.
