Harris, Silas

(born: 1870) Silas Harris was one of the many young African American men from Kentucky who were employed at the Harlem Jockey Club in Chicago, IL. Silas was a groomsman and horse trainer, according to the 1900 U. S. Census. By 1910, Silas had given up working with horses, and both he and his wife Mary were working as servants for a private family [source: 1910 U.S. Census]. Ten years later, Silas was a chauffeur [source: 1920 U.S. Census]. Silas Harris was born in 1870 in Shelbyville, KY, the son of Bettie and Stephen Taylor. Silas Taylor died in Chicago, IL on February 16, 1925 and is buried in Lincoln Cemetery [sources: 1880 U.S. Census; and Illinois, Deaths and Stillbirths Index in Ancestry].
