Jones, Lydia

Lydia Jones was one of the original members of The First Baptist Church of Columbus (OH) in 1824. Lydia Jones was probably not a slave. The church was the first Baptist church formed in the city of Columbus. The church started with 11 members, three of whom were African American: Lydia Jones from Kentucky, and Patty Booker and George Butcher, both from Virginia.

The First Baptist Church of Columbus Papers are in the Ohio Historical Society Library/Archives. For more see chapter 43, "Baptist," by O. C. Hooper, in History of the City of Columbus, Capital of Ohio, vol. 2, by A. E. Lee [available online at Google Books].
