Scott, Anna Marie Porter Wall
(born: September 12, 1925 - died: June 8, 2019)Anna M. Porter may have been born in Tennessee, but Kentucky and Ohio have also been given as her birth location. She later lived in Fulton, KY. She was the daughter of Jevvie R. Patton and Thomas M. Porter. The family is enumerated in the 1930 U.S. Census when they were living in Detroit, MI, where Thomas Porter was working at an automobile factory. In the 1940 Census, the family was living in McConnell, TN. Sometime after 1940, they moved to Fulton.
Ana was living in Fulton when she enlisted in the Army in Cincinnati, OH in 1944. Her enlistment record has her name as Anna M. Wall (source: National Archives, Access to Archival Databases). She served with the U.S. WACs from 1944-1947 and then returned to Fulton before moving to Urbana, IL in 1958. She married John T. Scott in Los Angeles in 1959 (source: California Marriage Index in Ancestry).
Anna Scott was the first woman elected to the Democrat State Central Committee in Illinois and was vice-chair of the State Democrat Party, 1974-1976. She ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1976 and the Illinois House of Representatives in 1977. In 1984, she was the coordinator of the 21st Congressional District for the Jessie Jackson campaign.
In 1993, Scott was appointed to the Illinois Real Estate and Banking Board by Governor Jim Edgar. She is a 1958 sociology graduate (B.S.), a 1960 education graduate (M.A.), and a 1964 social work graduate (M.S.W.) of the University of Illinois. She was a full-time sociology professor at Parkland College.
