Former Director of New York City Board of Education, Elementary School Libraries. She was the first African American to serve as president of both the New York Library Association and the New York City School Librarians Association. She received the 2007 Freedom to Read Foundation Roll of Honor Award. [New York City Board of Education was renamed the Department of Education]. Named in her honor is the Dr. Lucille C. Thomas Award that celebrates excellence in librarianship at Brooklyn Public Library.
