Penman, Elizabeth "Mrs. C. C. Stumm"
(born: 1854 - died: 1910)Born in Boyle County, KY, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Williams Penman, Elizabeth Penman was a teacher, journalist, and editor. She wrote under her husband's name as Mrs. C. C. Stumm; her husband was Rev. Chasteen C. Stumm. Both she and her husband attended Berea College.
Mrs. Stumm taught at Hearne Academy in Hearne, TX and Bowling Green Academy in Kentucky. She had also taught in Elizabethtown, KY. Her husband was a minister and the couple moved often, living in Frankfort, KY; Boston, MA; Nashville, TN; and Staunton, VA.
Mrs. Stumm was a contributing journalist to the Bowling Green Watchman, The Hub, Advocate, and other newspapers. She was a Philadelphia agent for The National Monitor and Our Women and Children, published in Louisville, KY.
She was widowed in 1895; her husband died in Washington, D.C. and was buried in Staunton [source: District of Columbia Deaths and Burials Index, Ancestry]. Mrs. Stumm returned to Philadelphia and became a hairdresser [source: Pennsylvania Death Certificate File #54246, Registered #13238, Ancestry].
When she died, May 8, 1910, her name was listed on the death certificate as Elizabeth Height: she was the widow of David Height [source: p. 858 in Gopsill's Philadelphia City Directory for 1896, Ancestry]. Elizabeth Penman Stumm Height is buried in Historic Eden Cemetery in Collingdale, PA.
