Spaulding, Jane Morrow

(born: 1900  -  died: 1965) 

Jane M. Spaulding was born in Logan County, KY and raised in Nashville, TN. Her ancestors founded Keysburg in Logan County.

Jane Spaulding was the first African American female assistant secretary in the cabinet of a U.S. President during the Truman administration; she was later reappointed by President Eisenhower as Assistant to the Secretary of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. At that time, the position made her the highest paid African American employed by the federal government.

In 1953, she was named Woman of the Year by the National Council of Negro Women; Spaulding had served as the finance chairman for the organization.

In 1951, she served as the U.S. representative to the Triennial Council of Women in Athens, Greece. In 1954, she was a member of the War Claims Commission.

Jane Morrow Spaulding was a graduate of Fisk University. She was the wife of Dr. Albert L. Spaulding, Sr. and mother of Dr. Albert L. Spaulding, Jr. She died 9/10/1965.
