Born in Jessamine County, KY, Gay was the father of Marvin P. Gaye, Jr., singer, songwriter, and producer. Gay, Sr. was charged with the shooting death of his son on April 1, 1984. Bishop S. P. Rawlings of Lexington led the funeral tribute. Gay, Sr. had left Kentucky in 1935 and became a pastor at the House of God Church in Washington, D.C. He later moved to Los Angeles, CA, where he died.
