Death Year : 1999
Edythe J. Hayes, born in Selma, AL, began teaching in the Lexington, KY, Carver Elementary School in 1953; she later became a principal and earned promotions to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Fayette County Schools, the first African American at that post. She was also the first African American woman on the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees. Hayes retired in 1996. The Edith J. Hayes Middle School was completed in 2004.
