Little Africa (Louisville, KY)
Start Year : 1870
This community, previously referred to as Needmore, was the African American section of Parkland in Louisville. By the 1920s it included several hundred homes as well as businesses and schools. In the 1870s, Joseph S. Cotter, Sr. became the first African American resident in the Homestead settlement. Little Africa began to disappear in the 1940s when the Housing Authority began work on the Cotter Home Project. Today a Kentucky Historical Marker notes the area where Little Africa once existed.
