Garfield Smith was born in Campbellsville, KY. He was a 6'9" center on the Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) basketball team, 1964-1968. Smith played in 67 games and was the school's 3rd all-time leading rebounder. He was one of the first three African American basketball players at the school. (The other two were Bobby Washington and Toke Coleman.) Smith was selected by the Boston Celtics in round 3 of the 1968 NBA draft. He played with the Celtics for two years, then played for one year with the San Diego Conquistadors, an ABA team. Smith played in a total of 134 games and scored 428 points during his three seasons.
