Irons, Sandra Jean Carr

(born: 1940  -  died: 2012) 

Sandra Jean Carr Irons was born in Middlesboro, KY, to Roy and Rosa Green Carr. She is a graduate of Kentucky State University and Purdue University.

Prior to becoming an educator, she was a social worker with the Ohio Department of Social Welfare in Dayton, OH. She left Ohio and moved to Indiana.

In 1971, she became president of the Gary, IN, Teachers Union, Local No.4 AFT, and continued in that position for 37 years until her retirement in 2008.

Since 1974, she has been a vice president of the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO (AFT). She was the first vice president of the NW Indiana Federation of Labor in 1987, becoming president in 1995.

Sandra Jean Irons died August 11, 2012, in Gary, Indiana.
